In the autumn of 2018, Kunsthall Stavanger will launch a new series of exhibitions in which artist-run spaces are invited to present a project within our galleries. Concurrently, we invite the artists who run the venues to present their own artwork as well, highlighting the relationship between curatorial and creative practices. The inaugural exhibition in the series, titled Frail Mighty, will present Stavanger-based gallery Prosjektrom Normanns.
Prosjektrom Normanns is an artist-run space in Stavanger dedicated to the production and exhibition of experimental, site-specific projects, established in 2011 and directed by the visual artists Elin Melberg and Margrethe Aanestad. The curated section of the exhibition includes the Norwegian artists A K Dolven, Vibeke Tandberg, Mattias Härenstam and Ane Graff, as well as the American artist Nathlie Provosty. The simultaneous collaborative exhibition with Aanestad and Melberg will present new works by the artists including textile, drawing, sculpture and painting.

In content both sections of Frail Mighty pertain to a deeply personal but nevertheless universal issue; existential vulnerability. The works are all conceptually and / or materially tactile and explore the boundary between having and losing control through personal existential projects or through a close relationship with the material and the strength and parallel vulnerability found here. The works point to an exploration of the individual, the elements and processes that contribute to one’s existence — or allow one to cease to exist.
In parallel with the exhibition at Kunsthall Stavanger, there will be a video work by Mattias Härenstam on view offsite at Prosjektrom Normanns. The video will be screened on a loop on Saturday and Sunday, November 3-4, and Saturday and Sunday, November 10-11, from 12-3pm, or by appointment.

A K Dolven (b. Oslo, Norway, 1953) lives and works in Oslo and Lofoten, Norway. She has exhibited extensively internationally at a wide range of institutions and galleries including: KunsthalleBern; Philadephia Museum of Art; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; IKON Gallery, Birmingham; Platform China, Beijing; The National Museum of Art, Oslo; KIASMA, Helsinki; Nordnorsk Art Museum, Tromsø; CCC Tours, France and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Her work is included in central international private and public collections, such as Art Institute of Chicago, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Hoffmann Collection and Sammlung Goetz in Germany. Recent solo exhibitions include Kunsthall Svalbard, Longyearbyen, OSL contemporary, Oslo, (2016) and IKON Gallery, Birmingham, (2015). Recent group exhibitions include the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark and 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai.

Ane Graff (b. Bodø, Norway, 1974) lives and works in Oslo, Norway. She graduated from Bergen National Academy of the Arts in 2004 and currently holds a position of research fellow at the Oslo Academy of Fine Art. Recent exhibitions include Soon Enough: Art in Action, Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm; Myths of the Marble, Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Oslo, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; the 11th Gwangju Biennale The Eighth Climate (What Does Art Do?), Gwangju; and Surround Audience -The New Museum Triennial 2015, NY.

Nathlie Provosty (b. Cincinnati, OH, 1981) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Recent one-person exhibitions include Nathalie Karg Gallery in New York (2018) and A Palazzo Gallery in Brescia, Italy (2017); Group exhibitions include Colby Museum of Art, ME (2017), and Washington University Museum, DC (2017). Recent collaborations include the contribution of album art to Planetarium, a record by Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner, and James McAlister (June 2017). Works are included in the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (NY), the Baltimore Museum of Art (MD), the Colby Museum of Art (ME), the Farnsworth Museum of Art (ME), the Portland Museum of Art (ME), the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (CA), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), and the Museum of Modern Art (NY). Her first solo institutional exhibition in Europe will take place at the Museo del Risorgimento in Turin, Italy (October 30, 2018 – January 6, 2019).

Vibeke Tandberg (b. Oslo, Norway, 1967) lives and works in Oslo. Recent exhibitions and film screenings include OSL contemporary, Oslo; Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo; Babylon Kino, Berlin; Tomio Koyama, Kyoto, Turner Contemporary, Margate; National Gallery, Oslo. Tandbergs works are represented in various international collections including the collections of National Art Museum and Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo; Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris and Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Guggenheim Collection and Museum of Modern Art in New York. She has published several novels at the Norwegian publisher Forlaget Oktober since 2011. Vibeke Tandberg was awarded the Lorch Schive Art Price 2017 in Trondheim, Norway.

Mattias Härenstam (b. 1971 in Sweden) lives and works in Oslo. He graduated from Bergen National Academy of the Arts, and later Staatliche Hochschule für bildende Künste Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main (prof. Herman Nitsch). Recent exhibitions include Lorch Schives Art Prize 2017, Trondheim; Stavanger Art Museum, Stavanger; Konstepedemien, Gøteborg; Galleri F 15. Moss; National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo, Kunsthall Charlottenborg, Copenhagen and Whitechapel Gallery, London. His works are included in the collections of National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oslo Municipality Art Collection, Arts Council Norway and Stavanger Art Museum.
