Lauren Martin will show a specially commissioned work for Kunsthall Stavanger’s project #fromKStoyou. The work takes the form of a banner on the kunsthall’s building.
#fromKStoyou is an new and ongoing project by Kunsthall Stavanger initiated in response to the current COVID-19 crisis. Artists are asked to make works that can evoke joy and calmness, ground and inspire, as well as spread solidarity in this moment of time. The intention of the project is to keep artists engaged, support the art community where possible, and utilise art as a way to come together via both physical and digital channels. While most of the projects take place on digital platforms – such as Kunsthall Stavanger’s website and Instagram – the banner is installed on the outside of the kunsthall’s building, located in the centre of one of Stavanger‘s traffic hubs. The intention of the project is to keep artists engaged, support the art community where possible, and utilise art as a way to come together via both physical and digital channels. While most of the projects take place on digital platforms – such as Kunsthall Stavanger’s website and Instagram – the banner is installed on the outside of the kunsthall’s building, located in the centre of one of Stavanger‘s traffic hubs. The banner is meant to bring art to the public in a safe and engaging way and is visible for the hundreds, if not thousands, of onlookers that pass the building on a daily basis.
About the banner, Martin says:
"We are facing a critical moment on our planet where we have the opportunity to collectively manifest a positive future. We owe our planet a debt of gratitude, and we owe each other compassion, love, and an opportunity to heal undue suffering".
Lauren Martin
Working mainly digitally, illustrator and designer Lauren Martin finds humor and inspiration in nature and the mundane. In her world, flowers have faces, pieces of fruit have legs, and every inanimate object has a personality. Born and raised in New York City, Lauren began honing her skills at a young age through classes at the Art Students League of New York.
Med et hovedfokus på digitale uttrykk, finner illustratør og designer Lauren Martin humor og inspirasjon i naturen og det hverdagslige. I hennes verden har blomster ansikt, frukt har ben og hvert livløse objekt har en personlighet.
Født og oppvokst i New York City, ble hennes barndoms interesse i realisme videreført i studier av klassisk portrettering ved National Academy of Design på Manhattan. Etter flere år der hun hovedsakelig malte figurativ oljemalerier, ble hun interessert i tekstildesign og gikk videre til å ta en BFA i Textile/Surface design ved New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Mens hun var ved FIT ble Lauren med i indiepopbandet Frankie Cosmos og brukte sin nyvunnede kunnskap til å silketrykke t-skjorter for bandet. Å lage grafiske arbeider for t-skjortene førte henne ned en ny vei med illustrasjon og design som har informert arbeidet hennes i stor grad. Sammen med bandet har Lauren reist rundt i verden på turné og fått inspirerende snapshots av lokale designsamfunn fra Dublin til Seoul.
Arbeidet hennes har blitt vist i publikasjoner som LA Times og Saveur Magazine. Hun har også jobbet med kunder i New Yorks kulturfelt, inkludert nabolagsrestauranter og kinoer.
