Mobilizing Citizenship: Creating Future Sci-Fi Scenarios with Walk of Shame

Mobilizing Citizenship (MC) is an educational project where Norwegian and international artists and designers are invited to work with a small group of young people aged 12-16 at Kunsthall Stavanger during one semester.
For the spring semester we focused on movement and identity. During the semester the future adults worked with dance, future visions, costumes, performance and questions of identities.
In the first workshop of the semester run by Walk of Shame, the participants created future sci-fi characters consisting of own soundtracks and narratives. The workshop focused on utopias as a tool to express what one find as lacking in the present. Together with artist Zinzi Minott, the future adults worked with body ownership and to confidently respond to the space they are in. Together with artist Zinzi Minott, the future adults worked with body ownership and to confidently respond to the space they are in. In the workshop with Trojan Horse, the participants used Live Action Role-Playing as artistic strategy. By writing a common narrative and a set of characters, the participants explored the surrounding area while in character. In the last workshop of the season, run by Eglé Kulbokaité and Dorota Gawęda, they found inspiration in a mix of movement patterns such as bird flocking and collaboratory structures in crowds. The group created patterns, images and movements together, as if coming from one big, collective mind.
The overall focus of MC is to investigate how young people can use tools and methods from contemporary art to express themselves and be heard in today's society. MC is not a talent development programme, but rather an investigation into how contemporary art can be a relevant contribution in young people’s lives.

The overall focus of MC is to investigate how young people can use tools and methods from contemporary art to express themselves and be heard in today's society. MC is not a talent development programme, but rather an investigation into how contemporary art can be a relevant contribution in young people’s lives.
Since its inception in 2018, MC has developed into a practice-based research project. During the period 2022–2024, the project will focus on building more knowledge about how we can create good meetings between contemporary art and young people. As part of this, we are collaborating with institutions and cultural workers from around the world who have expertise in this area. The result of the project will take the form of reflections and documentations, made accessible to artists, curators, cultural workers and institutions who want to create relevant offerings for young people.
