Kunsthall Stavanger's monumental building is of high cultural and historical value in Stavanger. The building was opened by King Haakon VII as part of Stavanger's city jubilee in 1925 as the first exhibition space for visual arts in Stavanger. The building was designed by Erik Erga, an architect from Stavanger, and built with private funds from a number of contributors, both individuals and companies. The bulding housed and grew Stavanger’s first public art collection, before it was relocated to the Stavanger Art Museum in 1992.
According to the Director of Cultural Heritage Management in Stavanger, Kunsthall Stavanger's building is architecturally considered one of the most prominent monumental buildings in Stavanger. The building has great identity and landmark value, due to its majestic architecture and its location next to one of the city's main access roads. It is stylistically and architecturally unique in Rogaland county.
